Senior Care Assistant Newtownabbey

The role of our Senior Care Assistants is to work within our care teams to create a comfortable and caring environment which enables residents to flourish and to be as independent as possible, whilst also working within the natural limitations and boundaries of the resident’s care needs.  

An integral part of your role as a Senior Care Assistant is to be a true leader and you will be required to demonstrate leadership through coaching others, leading by example and providing hands on training and support to your team of carers. Senior Care Assistants play a pivotal role in creating a supportive and sympathetic working culture where more junior members of the team feel fully supported in their roles.  

Central to your role is:  

* Management of medication in accordance with medication policy and procedure, ensuring safety and care at all times. 

*To be in charge as required in the absence of the home manager and delegate and supervise staff. 

* To communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, ensuring comprehensive handovers are completed and updating the home manager of any changes to a residents care needs. 

* To ensure documentation including care plans, risk assessments etc. are written in a person-centred way, maintained and kept up to date in a timely manner. 

* To provide, supervise and monitor the daily routine to ensure high standards within the home. 

*The provision of person-centred care that always ensures the dignity, respect and enablement of all people that use our service.  

* Looking for ways to improve the care experience for residents and relatives and seeking out and implementing feedback received.  

* Ensuring the delivery of care by taking responsibility for the wellbeing of residents and aiming for the highest standard of holistic, safe and effective care.  

You must also be: 

  • Committed to working within the frameworks set out by the RQIA, NISCC and other regulatory bodies in a manner which underpins the Company’s values, policies and procedures. 

  • Receptive to ongoing training and demonstrate a desire to invest time and effort in your own personal development  

  • Maintain resident, staff and business confidentiality at all times. This is inclusive of social media.

About the role

Person-Centred Care  

  • Maintaining and updating care plans which are specific to an individual needs. 

  • Assisting with the personal care of residents including feeding, washing, bathing, dressing and toileting of residents. 

  • Promoting social, self-help and everyday living skills. 

  • Ensuring that all residents retain their privacy and dignity as far as possible. 

  • Assisting those residents with limited mobility to make the best use of aids provided. 

  • Appropriately supervising residents to ensure their safety at all times. 

  • Assisting in the promotion of continence. 

  • Participating in group, recreational and day activity programmes, and accompany residents on outings and to appointments as required. 

  • Ensuring that all untoward incidents, e.g. falls, accidents, complaints etc, relating to residents are reported. 

  • Caring for residents’ personal possessions and ensure that all personal information relating to residents remains confidential. 

 

Hospitality 

  • Assisting with the serving of food/drinks to residents as required. 

  • Assisting in the sorting and laundering of residents’ personal clothing and other laundry. 

  • Making and changing beds and ensure that bedrooms are clean and tidy. 

  • Ensuring that all equipment used by residents is cleaned and maintained 

 

  • Making visitors to the Home feel welcome and providing refreshments/assistance as required.  

  • Being kind and courteous to all service users of the home, providing the necessary assistance and responding to enquiries where required 

  • Treat all service users, colleagues and other third parties in and/or associated with the Home with dignity and respect at all times 

 

Administration & Training 

  • Completing all written records as instructed, and in line with, the Company’s policies and procedures. 

  • Reading and following all the Company’s policies and procedures 

  • Participating in staff meetings and mandatory training as required. 

Health & Safety 

  • Reporting immediately to the Nurse Manager or Team Leader, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a resident, staff member or self. 

  • Ensuring that all Company policies and procedures are understood and adhered to, including fire prevention and precautions, and Health & Safety regulations. 

  • Ensuring that all breakages and faulty equipment is reported. 

  • Ensuring the security of the Home is maintained at all times. 

 

Senior duties 

As a Senior Care Assistant, you will also be tasked with: 

  • Organising the floor and allocating duties out to care staff.  

  • Daily checks on the care staff documentation to ensure it is completed fully and accurately, and weekly auditing of same  

  • Ensuring staff supervision with care staff is maintained up to date.  

  • Taking responsibility for completing stock checks of essential products and reporting to admin staff for ordering.  

  • A daily walk around of rooms to ensure fresh and tidy.  

  • Ensuring activities are ongoing within the unit.  

  • Inducting new staff and coaching and mentoring new members of the team

What you will need

Required criteria

  • NVQ3 in Health & Social Care, related area or equivalent or higher recognised qualification (or working towards such a qualification)
  • Previous experience of working within a professional care environment
  • Experience of documentation preparation, reporting and care planning
  • A genuine interest and passion for working with people with various care needs and making a positive difference to all aspects of their daily living experience
  • Live registration with NISCC, satisfactory to the company

Desired criteria

  • Dementia related qualification and/or experience
  • Supervisory experience and/or experience acting as a team leader, buddy or mentor to others
