Activities Assistant - Newtownabbey
Wood Green recognises the importance of social and meaningful activity to residents and it is a core element of the care experience. The role of our Activities Assistant is to help to plan, organise and deliver a diverse and inclusive programme of activities and entertainment, both on and off site where residents are engaged and motivated in the daily ritual of life.
Our Activities Assistants are also tasked with organising celebrations for residents, themed meals and events for families and relatives to increase the social activity and community feel within the home.
Central to this role is:
The provision of a person-centred activities programme which ensures the social and emotional needs of the resident are met in a dignified and respectful way.
Innovation – looking for new and innovative ways to improve the activities experience for residents and relatives through seeking out new and innovative activities and methods in activity delivery.
Ensuring everyday excellence in the delivery of a diverse and inclusive activities programme which aims for the highest standards of holistic, safe and effective care.
About the role
Assisting with the development and delivery of an activities programme (within the allocated budget) which seeks to improve the residents emotional and physical wellbeing, and which offers a mixture of both group and individual activity throughout the home on a daily basis
Developing strong communication links with the Activities Co-ordinator, the Home Manager, the Carers, the kitchen staff and the resident’s relatives which fosters co-operation and collaboration in the smooth delivery of the activities programme
Organising celebrations for residents, themed meals and events for families and relatives to increase the social activity and community feel within the home. [There will be times when additional hours may be required to facilitate outings and events and a flexible approach will be adopted in order that residents receive the greatest advantage]
Ensuring the individual rights of residents and staff are safeguarded by working within the regulatory frameworks set out by NMC, NISCC Social Care Council and the RQIA in a manner which underpins the Company’s values, policies and procedures.
Working with external organisations and 3rd party stakeholders to seek out voluntary and community resources available for incorporation into the Activities Programme
Promoting the activities programme and the outcomes of the activities programme throughout the Home (though the use of photographs and other means)
Assessing resident’s activity needs and developing resident activities goals for the written care plan.
Encouraging resident and care staff participation in activities and documenting outcomes
Assisting with the completion of stock checks of essential activities resources and reporting to admin staff for ordering.
Health & Safety
Reporting immediately to the Nurse Manager or Nurse in Charge, any accident or incident incurred by a resident, staff member or self.
Ensuring that all Company policies and procedures are understood and adhered to, including fire prevention and precautions and Health & Safety regulations.
Maintaining an awareness of the Health and Safety requirements in the development of the Activities Programme and conducting risk assessments where necessary
Ensuring that all breakages and faulty equipment is reported.
Ensuring the security of the Home is maintained at all times.
General Responsibilities
Completing all written records and activities outcomes in care plans in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.
Reading and following all the Company’s policies and procedures
Participating in staff meetings and mandatory training as required.
Being kind and courteous to all service users of the home, providing the necessary assistance and responding to enquiries where required
Promoting and ensuring the good reputation of Wood Green Care Home at all times.
Treat all service users, colleagues and other third parties in and/or associated with the Home with dignity and respect at all times

Kindness, empathy and an acute understanding of the challenges facing residents as they come to terms with living in a new care environment;
A satisfactory Enhanced Access NI check
What you will need
Required criteria
- 6 months previous experience in caring or similar role
- A confident communicator with a good command of the English language, both written and spoken, who builds rapport easily with residents, relatives and colleagues
- A team player who can work effectively as a key member of a care team which is focused on delivering excellence
- Kindness, empathy and an acute understanding of the challenges facing residents as they come to terms with living in a new care environment
- A satisfactory Enhanced Access NI check
Desired criteria
- NVQ2 in Health & Social Care, related area or equivalent or higher recognised qualification
