About the role

In this role as Rigger, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant handling of cargo and lifting operations by securing loads, inspecting and maintaining rigging equipment, and supporting crane and stevedoring teams. The role is responsible for upholding port safety standards, maintaining accurate records, and assisting with general cargo operations to facilitate smooth and reliable terminal activities.

 

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Lash and secure cargo on equipment and terminal plant using chains, twist locks, turnbuckles, and other securing systems.

  • Devanning containers and assisting with sorting, handling, and preparing cargo for onward transport or storage.

  • Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs of lifting gear and rigging equipment (e.g. slings, spreader bars, shackles, chains, hooks etc).

  • Ensure that all rigging gear is compliant with LOLER  inspection schedules, certification requirements, and port safety standards.

  • Assist crane operators and stevedoring teams with safe lifting operations and ensure all cargo is properly balanced and secure.

  • Report damaged or non-compliant lifting gear and take immediate corrective action.

  • Maintain accurate records of rigging equipment stocks, inspections and maintenance logs.

  • Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety drills as required.

  • Support general cargo operations as needed, including container loading/unloading, securing breakbulk, and assisting in berth operations.

 

 

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for an experienced Rigger with strong skills in lashing, securing, and container handling, ideally with a background in ports or maritime operations. Carpentry or joinery experience, knowledge of rigging gear inspections, and a solid grasp of safety procedures are essential. You’ll need to be physically fit, comfortable working outdoors and at heights, and hold valid rigging and lifting certifications. Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and public holidays in line with vessel schedules is also required.

 

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working as a Rigger in a port, terminal, or maritime cargo environment.

  • Strong knowledge of lashing, securing techniques, and containerised cargo handling.

  • Demonstrated joinery skills

  • Strong carpentry skills, preferably as a time service joiner or similar.

  • Understanding of rigging gear inspection, lifting plans, and cargo safety procedures.

  • Physically fit and able to work in outdoor environments, at heights, and in all weather conditions.

  • Familiarity with port safety procedures, ISPS, and occupational health & safety regulations.

  • Ability to read cargo loading/lashing plans and basic lifting equipment manuals.

  • Valid rigging and lifting certifications (e.g. NVQ, NPORS, CPCS or nationally recognised qualifications).
