About the role

About the role

The Port of Leith specialises in handling cargoes such as aggregates, grains, animal feed, steel, recycled products together with general and break-bulk cargoes. We also have a large number of seasonal cruise liner visits spanning each year.

 In addition, we service Oil & Gas support vessels and we look forward to playing a key role in the developing renewables industry. 

As Operations Supervisor you will provide operational supervisory support to ensure that a safe and cost-effective service is provided for the loading and discharge of cargoes along with the organisation of our warehousing activity. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the role of Operations Supervisor is pivotal to ensuring the operational success of the Port of Leith.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

  • Promote a positive and safe workplace culture.

  • Ensure that all port operations work is fully compliant with legislation and Company procedures.

  • Co-ordination with the Engineering team to arrange for all equipment to be available and in position for loading and discharge work to commence on time. Escalating any concerns about equipment wear and tear deficiencies or breakdowns.

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of all technical aspects of cargo handling and arrange for the requisite numbers of trained Port Operators to be allocated to each job.

  • Work in accordance to ISO 9001, TASCC & OFF procedures to ensure these accreditations are maintained to industry standards.

  • Carry out continuous Port Operator plant competency assessments in alignment with our Company protocols.

  • Establish positive customer relationships by maintaining regular contact with customers and shipping agents.

What are we looking for?

  • Strong experience in a similar Operations Supervisory role with the capability to lead, motivate and supervise a team.

  • Detailed knowledge of operational systems and customer requirements with a mind-set which fosters a ‘can do’ approach to customer service.

  • Excellent planning, communication, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to prioritise work tasks in an often changing port environment and demonstrate the flexibility to be able to meet these challenges.  Dependent upon shipping arrangements, you will be required to work additional hours, including weekends.

  • Good IT skills with a sound practical knowledge of using Excel and MS Suite.

  • Experience of working in a unionised environment would also be advantageous.

  • Full UK driving license.
