Head of Control Centre Operations

Ventus Energy Limited provides turnkey asset management services to the global offshore wind industry. The HV Control Centre (HVCC) delivers a key role within Ventus Energy’s Asset Management Division. It provides a range of critical functions such as real-time / near-time operations, remote monitoring, and coordination of safety management activities, being offered as part of an overall turnkey package for Onshore/Offshore Windfarms and Offshore Transmission Networks (OFTOs).

The Head of Control Centre Operations is a key leadership role, overseeing all operational duties within the HVCC. The job holder will function as a key interface with other operational management and project roles within the Asset Management Division. The job holder will be responsible for leading the function by ensuring that the HVCC is adequately equipped and resourced to deliver 24/7 HVCC operations in accordance with requirements of all relevant Asset Management Agreements.

About the role

 The Head of Control Centre Operations will have responsibilities for the following.

1.       Effective engagement with the Director of Operational Technology, Director of Operations, Head of HV O&M, Head of HV Commissioning Projects, Head of Network Operations, hereafter referred to as the leadership of the Asset Management Division (AMD) to fully understand the requirements of the HVCC when delivering upon the services set out within Ventus Energy’s Asset Management Agreements.

2.       Effective engagement with the AMD Leadership Team to determine key performance indicators necessary to monitor quality-of-service provision and to quickly identify areas for improvement.

3.       Effective engagement with the AMD Leadership Team to evaluate future direction, diversification of services and general growth of the HVCC, ensuring that service offerings remain best in class and relevant to industry needs.

4.       Effective engagement with the AMD Leadership Team to define the necessary policies, procedures and solutions required to enable the HVCC to provide robust internal and external service offerings.

5.       Implement the policies, procedures and solutions resulting from point four above.

6.       Lead the HV Control Engineer Team by providing line management support through promotion and maintenance of a positive working culture and healthy work life balance.

7.       Ensure that the HV Control Engineer Shift Rota is effectively managed and maintained to maximise availability of Control Centre staff in line with HVCC service offerings.

8.       Ensure HV Control Engineer competencies and skills sets are maintained and developed to advance individual and team performance.

9.       Ensure that competency and capacity deficits are identified quickly by addressing gaps through training and/ or recruitment.

10.   Ensure that Outage Requests are processed and delegated to the appropriate HV Control Engineers based on competencies and staff capacity.

11.   Ensure that Authorisations remain valid and at appropriate standard and quantity to maintain adequate provision of service.

12.   Establish and maintain internal and external forums in relation to the HVCC function to aid near-time, real-time and future operations.

13.   Work in conjunction with the ICT Manager to ensure that the necessary networking and IT arrangements in are place for the provision of remote access to client SCADA platforms. Support the planning, delivery, and maintenance of a centralised SCADA Platform to facilitate enhancement and scalability of service offerings in line with future business needs.

14.   Ensure that the HVCC function is maintained within the Ventus Energy Business Continuity Plan (BCP) confirming operational availability in line with disaster recovery scenarios set out within the BCP.

15.   Lead the engagement with clients on operational matters concerning the HVCC and represent Ventus Energy and / or clients with key industry stakeholders such as National Grid ESO, UK DNOs, OFTOs and other relevant parties.

16.   Engage effectively with the Business Services Manager and HR Partner to ensure appropriate management of issues in a timely manner.

  •  Support reporting processes by regularly identifying opportunities for improvement, and ensuring that near misses, safety observations, concerns or risks are reported in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND PROFILE

Essential

  • Strong and demonstratable background working in a near-time and/or real-time operational role where daily operational management, quick decision-making and effective problem-solving skills are required.

  • A strong customer focus with a sound understanding of the Ventus Energy business and global offshore renewable energy sector.

  • Previous experience of team leadership and personnel management.

  • Previous experience of working within or providing support to a senior leadership team with the ability to influence outcomes.

  • Previous experience of working as a team member on a windfarm and a sound understanding of various stakeholders involved in windfarm management.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to react to shifting business priorities by managing workload effectively in line with competing business demands.

  • A problem-solving attitude and solutions driven individual with strong influencing skills.

  • The ability to set, monitor and evaluate individual and team targets and objectives in line with business goals.

  • Previous experience of possessing a strong commercial awareness through contract management or by working to a defined contractual scope.

  • Previous experience of finding successful outcomes through effective conflict resolution.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project) and common IT practices.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to communicate effectively during engagements with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Self-motivated with enhanced ability to effectively motivate and mentor others.

  • Valid Driving License.

  • Valid UK and/or EU Passport.

  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development.

Desirable

  • Experience working within the electricity utility sector or private/commercial electricity network design/construction/operations/consultancy industry.

  • An authorisation (either current or previous) under a safe system of work for operation and execution of work on transmission and distribution electricity networks (e.g. – Senior Authorised Person or Control Person)

  • A good understanding of the UK electricity industry and the roles of the various stakeholders (i.e., DNO, Generator, System Operator, Regulator etc.)

Qualifications

It is desirable for candidates to be professionally qualified in an electrical engineering discipline; however significant and demonstrable industry experience is equally valid as an alternative to applicable engineering qualifications.
