About the role

We are seeking to appoint an experienced individual who will lead the Society’s Risk & Compliance function with responsibility for day to day risk management in line with the Risk Management Framework and Regulatory expectations.

 Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will bring a developed understanding of strategic risk within a financial services firm and the ability to provide risk leadership across multi-disciplinary teams. With a finance background, you will already be performing as a senior staff member within the Risk & Compliance field.  Ideally, you will have Board level exposure and experience of managing a broad risk portfolio. The role sits on the Senior Management Committee.

 What success looks like

You will deliver a risk management strategy within the parameters set down by the Society and the Board Risk Committee that ensures continued sustainability and supports the longer-term needs of our Members.

 You will have the authority and credibility to influence decisions at senior strategic and Board level in the best interests of the Society and its Members.

 You will lead with empathy and demonstrate the desired conduct that promotes a member centric, regulatory compliant culture within the Society’s risk appetite framework.

 You will lead through change and positively engage to ensure that risk and compliance requirements are integral to change management programs.

 You will be comfortable dealing with a degree of uncertainty and working through new situations with unknown outcomes to provide clarity of direction.

 What you will be doing

In this critical role, you will have responsibility for overseeing the second line of defence within the Society’s Risk Management Framework and providing leadership to a small team of Risk and Compliance specialists.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the overall strategic direction of the Society within a highly regulated environment.

  • Providing strategic risk management leadership encompassing all aspects of risk across the Society including stress testing, operational resilience and recovery and resolution.

  • Identifying, analysing and reporting on internal and external risks, ensuing that emerging risks are identified and assessed on a timely basis (forward looking focus).

  • Considering the risks and controls contained in the Society’s Risk Registers.

  • Providing leadership, ensuring the best utilisation of risk resources to deliver an effective and efficient risk management framework.

  • Developing strong relationships based on trust and credibility with the FCA and PRA Regulators, colleagues, Board and other relevant parties.

  • Monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of the risk management strategy and framework to appropriate Committees.

Key Criteria

  • Qualified Accountant or degree qualified with commensurate finance experience.

  • 5+ years’ similar up-to-date or current experience within financial services.

  • Experience and knowledge of ICAAP and ILAAP.

  • Capable of achieving Regulatory approval.

Key Skills

  • Demonstrable ability to interpret and provide guidance on complex risk matters at all levels.

  • Strong and practical leader with ability to provide sound strategic direction for a coordinated risk management approach.

Desirable

  • Experience of managing FCA/PRA relationship and providing interpretation of regulatory requirements.

  • Board level exposure.
