GRP Process & Quality Technician, Coventry

To assist and support the GRP Process Definition & Technical Training Manager in their daily duties. To ensure the GRP process is running to agreed and defined standards. To make sure that all raw materials are received to the required standard and are stored and handled correctly. To carry out raw material tests and analysis to determine the suitability for use in production. To manage the BMDS Calibration system. Manage GRP sample stock and prepare customer samples. To conduct relevant process and quality audits and actively seek improvements to the GRP process through CI projects and audit scores. Take charge of bespoke GRP colour production order mixing.

About the role

  • To regularly review GRP process SOP’s and update as necessary.

  • To ensure that all raw materials used on the GRP production line conform to our agreed specifications and standards of quality (packaging, material, performance etc.).

  • To carry out gel tests to determine the optimum level of Cobalt required to achieve a gel in the target number of minutes for each type of polyester resin delivered to site, prior to them being used in production.

  • To check that all of the additives that go into the recipe for the resins have been calibrated daily to make sure that they are all being delivered to the lines in their correct amount. To adjust recipe setting within agreed limits.

  • To report any problems with pumps or equipment that may be affecting additive dosing in any way to the maintenance department and the GRP Process Manager.

  • To stop production if you feel that the systems are not producing the correct recipe for sheet in the tolerances that have previously been agreed with you.

  • To conduct daily random quality checks of GRP sheet to ensure conformance to the agreed quality standards and to report immediately any non -conformance to the Supervisory team or your manager. In addition the production of a weekly report denoting the overall conclusion of the previous weeks sampling. I.e. – number of samples conducted, number of passes/fails and actions taken.

  • To demonstrate safe practice and to act as a role model for other GRP operators when handling and using GRP chemicals at all times.

  • To conduct and record the results of any GRP product or raw material trial as instructed by the GRP Process Manager, and to catalogue and store any samples produced from these trials (e.g. these may include fire-test and QUV panels).

  • To work with the GRP Process Manager to colour match GRP sheet to customer specification when required, (recipe formulation), and to calculate the cost and amount of pigment required to run the customer’s order. To be a point of reference for all pigmented sheet manufacture, and to help monitor all pigmented sheet runs to ensure that colour consistency is achieved. To file colour swatches for reference.

  • To manage site calibration records, maintain the calibration manual and ensure calibration adherence within agreed timeframes.

  • Identify improvement opportunities within the GRP process and actively take part in CI projects and implementation.

  • To carry out process and key 16 audits.

  • Manage GRP sample stock levels ensuring they are labelled correctly, fit for despatch and request stock replenishment.

  • To produce former sets for use in production when required.

  • To understand BMDS Quality Management System and conduct internal audits throughout the business.

  • To demonstrate compliance with current Health and Safety legislation at all times.

  • To demonstrate compliance with ISO 9001 and the BMDS quality management system.

  • To demonstrate compliance with our Permit to operate under the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010

  • To demonstrate compliance with ISO14001 and the environmental management system

  • The recording and reporting of machine faults in the department and working with the GRP supervisory team to prioritise the workload.

  • To maintain housekeeping of the GRP Lab and sample rack.

  • To provide cover for GRP operators as and when required.

What you will need

Required criteria

  • A formal qualification in Chemistry at degree level, or a very comprehensive knowledge of the GRP sheet manufacturing process, or a keen interest in Chemistry.
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
  • Confidence in calculating volumes for solids and liquids, and in calculating densities, concentrations and weights.
  • Good clear documentation skills
  • Good communication skills, able to communicate successfully at all levels with the ability to separate detail from overview.
  • A high level of integrity, with a positive and professional attitude
  • An ability to use own initiative
  • An ability to learn new tasks quickly and accurately
  • An ability to plan and execute your own workload

Desired criteria

  • A good all round knowledge of GRP sheet and all of the processes that go into its manufacture, from resin and chemical handling to operation at the top end, formers, and saws end of the GRP production lines.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Some experience of working in a team in a production / manufacturing environment
  • Basic level of IT skill with knowledge of MS word and excel
  • A good knowledge of our ERP system, Microsoft AX, with an ability to reference sales and works orders, schedule works orders, place purchase orders, and raise and investigate incidents.
  • A good basic underpinning knowledge of Health & Safety, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 18001
  • Some knowledge of Lean Manufacturing techniques and 5S
  • Strong team working skills
