Activ8 Solar Energies in partnership with SSE Airtricity are seeking an experienced Electrical Design & Survey Engineer to join our Technical Team, reporting directly to the Technical Manager. 

This is a full-time, permanent position based from our UK office in Burnley, offering a competitive salary, pension, healthcare and additional benefits.  

The role will be responsible for carrying out detailed electrical site surveys and producing electrical designs for commercial and industrial solar PV projects. This is a hands-on technical position combining site-based surveying with office-based electrical design, playing a key role in ensuring projects are technically viable before progressing into construction.

About this role

Key Responsibilities 

  • Carry out detailed technical and electrical site surveys across commercial and industrial properties. 

  • Identify suitable electrical points of connection for solar PV systems. 

  • Assess existing switchgear, transformers, distribution boards, metering and electrical infrastructure. 

  • Review proposed cable routes, containment requirements and installation constraints. 

  • Produce electrical designs including: 

  • Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) 

  • Cable sizing 

  • Voltage drop calculations 

  • Protection requirements 

  • Earthing arrangements 

  • Inverter and equipment selection 

  • Review projects following sales handover and identify technical risks, constraints or additional requirements. 

  • Support the Technical Manager with DNO applications, G99 requirements and technical queries. 

  • Produce clear technical information and design packs for project delivery teams and installation contractors. 

  • Liaise with clients, project managers, designers and subcontractors throughout the design and delivery process. 

  • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning where required. 

  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant British Standards, electrical regulations and industry best practice. 

Requirements 

  • Experience within electrical design, electrical contracting, M&E, renewable energy or industrial electrical installations. 

  • Experience using electrical design software and CAD packages (Trimble ProDesign or equivalent experience desirable). 

  • Strong understanding of LV electrical distribution systems. 

  • Experience assessing switchboards, transformers and points of connection. 

  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and assess existing electrical infrastructure. 

  • Experience producing or reviewing Single Line Diagrams and electrical calculations. 

  • Good understanding of BS 7671. 

  • Ability to work independently on site and produce accurate survey information. 

  • Strong attention to detail and practical problem-solving ability. 

  • Strong communication and organisational skills. 

  • Solar PV experience would be advantageous but is not essential where the candidate has a strong electrical engineering background. 

Qualifications 

Desirable qualifications include: 

  • HNC/HND/Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience. 

  • City & Guilds / NVQ electrical qualifications. 

  • BS 7671 18th Edition. 

  • Inspection & Testing qualification. 

  • Full UK driving licence.
