Role Summary 

To support the Home Manager in the day-to-day leadership, operational management and delivery of high-quality, safe and person-centred care within the Home. The Deputy Manager plays a key role in promoting resident wellbeing, dignity, independence and positive outcomes while supporting effective governance, workforce management and service delivery.

The role provides operational, clinical and professional leadership throughout the Home, supporting teams to deliver compassionate, responsive and high-quality care in line with regulatory, professional and organisational standards. The Deputy Manager will support the coordination of staffing, resident care, quality assurance, safeguarding and multidisciplinary working while contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of the service.

In the absence of the Home Manager, the Deputy Manager may assume delegated responsibility for operational oversight and the coordination of the Home in line with organisational requirements and regulatory expectations.

The role may involve supporting residents living with dementia, mental health conditions, behavioural support needs or complex care requirements depending on the service environment.

About this role

Key Responsibilities 

Service Delivery & Stakeholder Experience 

  • Support the Home Manager in leading the delivery of high-quality, safe and person-centred care tailored to individual resident needs, preferences and outcomes in line with RQIA care home minimum standards 2022.

  • Promote resident wellbeing, dignity, independence, choice and quality of life across all aspects of care and service delivery. 

  • Support effective oversight of assessments, care planning, risk management and clinical interventions to ensure safe and responsive care. 

  • Ensure residents, families and representatives are treated with compassion, professionalism and respect and are appropriately involved in care and decision-making processes. 

  • Support meaningful resident engagement, wellbeing initiatives, activities and positive daily experiences within the Home. 

  • Promote positive relationships with residents, relatives, visitors, external professionals and wider stakeholders. 

  • Support the effective management of complaints, concerns, compliments and feedback in line with organisational procedures and learning processes. 

  • Contribute to maintaining a welcoming, inclusive and professional environment for residents, visitors and colleagues.


Leadership & People Management 

  • Support the Home Manager in providing visible, supportive and values-led leadership across the Home. 

  • Promote a positive culture of collaboration, accountability, professionalism, inclusion and continuous improvement. 

  • Provide day-to-day operational, clinical and professional leadership to nursing, care and ancillary teams. 

  • Support effective workforce planning, staffing deployment, rota coordination and skill mix management appropriate to service needs. 

  • Supervise, support and mentor staff to promote high standards of care, professionalism and resident experience. 

  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, induction, supervision, appraisal and staff development processes where required. 

  • Support the management of performance, conduct, capability, attendance or practice concerns in line with organisational policy. 

  • Act as a positive role model, demonstrating professionalism, accountability, compassion and effective leadership at all times. 

  • Support staff wellbeing, engagement and ongoing professional development opportunities.


Communication & Collaborative Working 

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with residents, relatives, advocates, multidisciplinary teams, regulators and external professionals. 

  • Liaise professionally with GPs, pharmacists, inpatient teams, social workers, community teams and external agencies to support safe and effective resident care. 

  • Ensure effective communication systems, handovers, meetings and escalation processes operate throughout the Home. 

  • Promote effective multidisciplinary working and collaborative approaches to resident care and service delivery. 

  • Escalate safeguarding concerns, incidents, operational risks or clinical issues appropriately and without delay. 

  • Support resident, relative and staff engagement initiatives and encourage feedback to support service improvement. 

  • Communicate organisational priorities, expectations and service developments clearly and professionally to teams.

Governance, Compliance & Professional Standards

  • Support compliance with all relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, professional standards and organisational policies. 

  • Promote safe working practices and maintain oversight of safeguarding, infection prevention and control, medicines management, health and safety and risk management processes. 

  • Support effective clinical governance, quality assurance, audit activity and continuous improvement initiatives across the Home. 

  • Ensure accurate, timely and appropriate care documentation, governance records and operational reporting systems are maintained. 

  • Support the management of incidents, accidents, complaints, investigations and safeguarding processes in line with organisational procedures. 

  • Contribute to maintaining a safe, clean and suitable environment for residents, visitors and colleagues. 

  • Support regulatory inspections, audits, reviews and action plans where required. 

  • Promote a culture of openness, accountability, reflective practice and continuous learning throughout the Home. 

  • Ensure compliance with RQIA, NMC, NISCC and organisational requirements where applicable.

  • Adhere to safeguarding, emergency procedures, fire safety requirements and organisational health and safety processes at all times, escalating concerns appropriately and without delay.


Financial & Operational Management

  • Support the effective and responsible use of staffing, equipment, stock and operational resources within agreed parameters. 

  • Assist in monitoring staffing levels, rota management, agency usage and operational pressures to support safe and sustainable service delivery. 

  • Support oversight of environmental standards, equipment safety, maintenance reporting and operational systems across the Home. 

  • Contribute to effective stock control, ordering processes and resource management within the Home. 

  • Support service development, operational improvement and efficient working practices where appropriate. 

  • Assist in ensuring operational schedules, audits and reporting requirements are completed accurately and within required timescales. 

Professional Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain professional registration and ongoing compliance requirements where applicable. 

  • Participate fully in supervision, appraisal, mandatory training and continuing professional development activities. 

  • Maintain awareness of current legislation, professional standards, regulatory guidance and best practice relevant to the care sector. 

  • Support learning, mentoring and development opportunities within the team environment. 

  • Contribute to quality improvement, governance and service development initiatives across the Home. 

  • Promote reflective practice, evidence-based care and continuous learning within the service.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Deputise for the Home Manager where required, including periods of planned or unplanned absence. 

  • Participate in on-call management arrangements where required. 

  • Attend meetings, inspections, training sessions and governance forums as required. 

  • Support wider organisational projects, service developments and operational initiatives where reasonably required. 

  • Undertake any other duties reasonably requested in line with the scope, responsibility and seniority of the role.

Qualifications & Registration 

  • Registered Nurse on the live NMC Register appropriate to the role and service requirements ([Delete as applicable: RN / RMN / RNLD]).

  • GCSE Grade C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent qualification); OR demonstrable literacy, numeracy and communication skills appropriate to the role.

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and compliance with NMC revalidation requirements where applicable.

  • Management, leadership or clinical governance qualification/training relevant to the care sector.

Experience & Knowledge 

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a senior, supervisory or leadership role within a regulated care home, healthcare or nursing environment; OR demonstrable equivalent experience supporting operational leadership within a regulated care setting.

  • Experience supporting, supervising or coordinating multidisciplinary teams within a care setting.

  • Demonstrable understanding of person-centred care, safeguarding, governance, workforce management and regulatory compliance within a regulated environment.

  • Knowledge of staffing, rota coordination, risk management, quality assurance and operational oversight within a care service.

  • Experience supporting services for individuals living with dementia, mental health conditions or complex care needs. 

  • Experience supporting inspections, audits or quality improvement initiatives within a regulated service.

  • Ability to support and oversee the delivery of high-quality, safe and person-centred care services within a regulated care environment.

  • Excellent spoken and written English communication skills with the ability to complete professional documentation, participate in handovers and communicate effectively across multidisciplinary, operational and regulatory environments.

IT & Administration

  • Ability to maintain accurate operational, governance and care documentation in line with organisational and regulatory requirements. 

  • Good organisational, administrative and digital skills with the ability to use electronic systems, reporting tools and workforce records effectively.

  • Experience using digital care planning, electronic medication administration, rota management or governance systems.

Other Requirements

  • Flexibility to support operational, on-call and service requirements where reasonably required. 

  • Ability to exercise professional judgement, leadership and decision-making within a dynamic care environment 

  • Ability to deputise for the Home Manager and support operational oversight of the Home where required.

  • Full clean driving licence.
