Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) New Grad Post

To provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of children and/or adults with speech, language, communication, eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties. The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering evidence-based interventions while developing their clinical skills under the supervision of senior therapists.

The role provides an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified therapist to consolidate professional competencies, participate in structured supervision, and contribute to high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Carry out assessments of communication and swallowing difficulties using a range of standardised and non-standardised assessment tools.

  • Develop and implement person-centred treatment plans based on assessment findings.

  • Deliver individual and group therapy programmes as appropriate.

  • Monitor, evaluate, and review intervention outcomes.

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records in accordance with professional and organisational standards.

  • Provide advice, education, and support to patients, families, carers, and other professionals.

  • Identify safeguarding concerns and follow organisational procedures where required.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to collaborative care planning.

  • Manage a defined caseload under the guidance of senior colleagues.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Adhere to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) code of ethics and professional standards.

  • Participate in regular clinical supervision and appraisal.

  • Maintain a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio.

  • Work within the scope of professional competence and seek support when required.

Service Development

  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives and quality assurance activities.

  • Assist with audits, data collection, and outcome measurement activities.

  • Support the development of resources and clinical pathways.

Training and Education

  • Deliver training and awareness sessions to families, carers, education staff, healthcare professionals, and support workers.

  • Participate in student placements, observational visits, and professional learning opportunities as appropriate.

  • Share knowledge and best practice within the team.


Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree or MSc in Speech and Language Therapy recognised by the HCPC.

  • HCPC registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.

  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (desirable).

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of communication and swallowing disorders.

  • Understanding of evidence-based practice.

  • Awareness of safeguarding policies and procedures.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Effective organisational and time-management skills.

  • Competent IT skills and ability to maintain electronic records.

Essential Experience

  • Clinical placement experience across a range of settings during professional training.

  • Experience carrying out assessments and delivering therapy under supervision.
